6) FNC panel to assess civic services
• Published: 00:00 June 9, 2004 Gulf News

The Federal National Council (FNC) yesterday formed a committee to visit remote areas to evaluate civic services.

Most of the rural areas of the country are still deprived of basic amenities such as road networks, health facilities and education services, Mohammed Rashid Al Saridi told the house.

"Today's debate is one of the most important issues to be addressed," he said. "In some remote areas, people have to travel tens of miles for health and education services in the country in this modern era. These areas have no social, cultural and entertainment facilities," he said, adding that residents, particularly students in East Coast villages have to travel 60km every day.
"They have to take Dibba-Massafi road where most of the fatal accidents occur," he said.

After a lengthy and heated debate regarding a lack of decent amenities, particularly in the East Coast and the villages surrounding Hajar Mountains, the council voted for a committee. It will examine infrastructure facilities and submit a report to the government. The committee will also prepare a comprehensive report and hold talks with officials concerned.
The issue was raised in the house during a general debate, and finally shaped into a resolution, tabled by 12 members at yesterday's session. The members blamed government agencies for ignoring remote areas.
